The book trade fights for freedom of expression
The Börsenverein des deutschen Buchhandels (German Publishers and Booksellers Association) unites around 4,500 publishers, bookstores, intermediary booksellers and other media companies under its roof. Together with the Frankfurt Agency Alliance, the Publishers Association initiated a Campaign week to draw attention to the global threat to the human right to freedom of expression.

Since 2021, the Campaign week for Freedom of Expression commences on May 3rd of every year, the nationwide Day of the Freedom of the Press, and ends on May 10, the Day when Germany commemorates the Nazi Book Burnings of 1933. Thirteen guest testimonials from well-known German personalities were selected for this campaign – for example from Michel Friedman, Wolfgang Niedecken, Peter Fischer and Jagoda Marinic. In the first year, 132 million contacts were achieved for Freedom of Expression Week via earned, owned and paid media.

The Frankfurt Agency Alliance is an association of excellent creative agencies and service providers. The members helped the German Publishers & Booksellers Association's Freedom of Expression campaign week achieve sensational success right from the start. The fact that they have done this largely pro bono deserves the highest recognition and is an expression of a high level of social commitment and sense of responsibility for the elementary values of a democracy.
